How to replace a Ceiling Light?
How difficult or involved a project replacing a ceiling light will be will depend on the type of ceiling fixture you are working with. Changing out a recessed fixture can be somewhat challenging because of the different methods used to mount them. Recessed fluorescent fixtures are usually mounted between the ceiling rafters and held in place by screws. Recessed incandescent can lights are held in the ceiling by spring clips. Surface mounted fixtures are held in place by screws or a hex nut the attaches them to the ceiling outlet box.
Turn off Circuit Breaker
Turn off the branch circuit breaker on the service panel supplying power to the light fixture that you will be replacing. Double check to make sure that you have turned off the right breaker by bringing a noncontact voltage tester close to the light switch plate cover.
Surface Mounted Fixtures
With surface mounted incandescent or small circular fluorescent fixtures, remove the two #8-32 screws or the hex nut securing the fixture to the lighting outlet box. With larger fluorescent fixtures, you will need to remove two or more additional screws securing the fixture to ceiling rafters or to anchors embedded in the ceiling finish. Once lowered from the outlet box, disconnect the lights fixture wires from the circuit wires by unscrewing their plastic wire nuts. When connecting the new fixture, connect the black, white and bare fixture wires to their matching circuit wires.
Replacing Recessed Fluorescent Fixtures
Remove the fluorescent lights diffuser cover and the light tubes. Remove the cover from over the ballast and disconnect the wires connecting the ballast transformer to the branch circuit wires by removing the wire nuts. With the wires disconnected, locate four or more screws securing the fixture to the ceiling rafters. These screws either pass up through the fixture lip into the near edge of the rafters or pass through the side of the fixture into the side of the rafters. Install the new fixture in the reverse order.
